Course Description

This skill set provides participants with essential safety knowledge and skills for surface coal mine environments, including risk management, workplace communication and safe work practices.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Students undertaking RIISS00034 - Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set must be able to meet the practical, physical, sensory, PPE and learning requirements of the course.

  • Have the visual acuity required to accurately interpret hand signals and flags.
  • Have the hearing ability required to recognise alarms and other auditory safety signals critical to safe operations.
  • Be physically and psychologically capable of performing practical tasks, including safely responding to a local emergency or incident while wearing appropriate PPE.
  • Provide and wear protective footwear/safety shoes and comfortable, practical clothing during practical sessions and assessments.
  • Have the language, literacy and numeracy skills required to read and interpret legislation, regulations, workplace procedures and basic geological/survey data, communicate clearly in English using industry terminology, and complete workplace forms and reports.
  • For online learning, have basic digital literacy skills and access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other internet-connected device to complete online studies and assessment tasks.

Course Details

Course Duration: Face-to-face: at least 16 hours face-to-face contact time. Online with face-to-face assessment: at least 8 hours face-to-face contact time. Course durations can vary; these are minimum possible durations.

Assessment Activities

Assessment includes practical demonstrations, documentation and theory assessment.

  • Complete seven simulated practical scenarios, including a vehicle inspection, responding to local emergencies/incidents, completing a simulated risk assessment, preparing for a site emergency, responding to an equipment fault and responding to a fire emergency.
  • Complete required documentation including Take 5 Hazard Identification Form, Vehicle Pre-Operation Checklist, Incident Report Forms, Electrical Access Work Permit, JSEA/SWMS, Pre-Operation Checklist and Equipment Fault Log.
  • Complete a written theory assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions.
